Silver White Cake

Recipe Introduction
An old-fashioned white cake recipe.
List of Ingredients
2 1/4 cups cake flour -- or 2 1/8 cups AP flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening -- part butter
1 cup milk
1 1/2 teaspoons flavoring
4 egg whites -- 1/2 cupRecipe
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 8-inch layer pans or 9-inch square pan.
2. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt.
3. Add shortening (part butter). Pour in a little over half of the milk. Beat 2 minutes. Add remaining milk, flavoring and egg whites. Beat 2 minutes.
4. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake until cake tests done. Cool. Finish with desired filling and frosting. Elegant with Almond Cream Filling; or a white frosting with melted chocolate poured over it or with Fluffy White Frosting sprinkled with shredded fresh coconut. Bake layer cakes 30 to 35 minutes. Square or oblong cake 35 to 45 minutes.
